The book is interesting but there is very little about training. A training topic is introduced then the reader is referenced to the appendix to find a book on training. This is an expensive paperback and what you apparantly are paying for is a lot of photos of various breeds of dogs posing with other animals. I was very disappointed. As I need a training manual for our new LGD pups, not a photo album. This is a great primer to get you started choosing/managing LGDs. There are not lots of books out there to choose from on this somewhat arcane topic.It is more indepth than the Storey Livestock Guardian Animals sections on LGDs. There is a lot of information on the various breeds.There is quite a bit of advice in the book for those choosing an LGD as a companion dog, bonded to people instead of stock.With much of the book focussed on breeds and puppy selection and testing, this book's audience seems to be those who want to breed purebred LGDs for sale.The book DOGS by the Coppingers offers more in the way of behavior analysis. Every dog is an individual, and many modern working LGDs are hybrids. Day to day problem solving for the shepherd is not really covered here, or in many other books on the topic either. I fill in the gaps and find that kind of field training information online in email groups and message boards. The USDA also has some helpful publications.
